CogWheels for Autism is a non-profit corporation created for the sole
purpose of helping to support students who have autism attain the
supports they need to successfully navigate, and graduate, college. We
started as a FaceBook group called Rock Tumblers for Autism, and we have
been raising funding to buy rock tumblers fro children who have autism
(ASD).
CogWheels for Autism is an official nonprofit with initial
filings in place to not only become a registered charity, but a
501(c)(3) tax exempt entity. Our mission is to raise funds that will
help us meet the needs, specifically, for college students who need
specialized supports in the college environment, and continuing support
for children with autism through the gift of rock tumblers. Two of the
founders of the company have a child with High Functioning Autism (HFA),
and discovered through their love of rocks that rock tumbling provides
social and emotional/sensory support for children with autism, as well
as supporting communication needs, and promoting an interest in the
sciences. One of our founding members is a special education teacher
with a Master's degree in special education, and a minor in autism specialty.
It was discovered while getting the Master's degree at Western Oregon
University, that only 30% of people with HFA attempt to go to college,
and that only an approximated 1% of those students graduate. The low
graduation rates for those with autism was determined to be because of
the lack of supports in the social, emotional, and communication
deficits that people who have autism often have. It is our intention to
help supply autism consultants to those in college to the same degree as
they receive in the public K12 school setting.
CogWeels for Autism
(CfG) hopes to one day expand into low income housing for those who have
disabilities. This website has been created with the purpose of
allowing us to begin fundraising through the goodness of the public who
have a heart for those with with disabilities. We at CogWheels for
Autism want to thank you personally for your donations and support of
our children who have autism.
Stay tuned for our up and coming
announcement of a new website that will allow us to sell products that
will help us support our cause, as well as weekly news and information
about autism, as well as honorable mentions for those companies who
donate to our cause.
Nice.
